Painting your garage door

It’s the job everybody loves to hate. Painting your garage doors can be a bit of a pain but if you do a good job you may not have to paint them again for another 5 years! So how can you paint your garage doors to perfection? Well, first a clean door is required. Strip the existing paint and dirt of with an all-purpose cleaner so the surface is ready for a new layer of paint. Before bringing out the paintbrush, you’ll need to mask of any areas that do not require paint, such as the handle and door lock.

Once everything you need to mask is masked, you’re good to go. You’ll need to prime the door using a latex exterior primer. This gives a very solid base and it’s needed if you want your paint job to last a considerable amount of time. You can apply the primer with a standard paintbrush but do this on a dry day because it will need to sit for 24 hours to dry. Once completely dry, you’re ready to add the paint. Try to find all-weather paint for this job because again it is more durable. When applying the paint be sure to make sure any streaks or drips are smoothly brushed and blended into the surrounding areas. The door should be consistent all the way through. This is likely to require two layers of paint, so the first one can be a little bit streaky, yet the second should really fill in any gaps and bring the colour together as one.

Then when the job is done simply allow it to dry and peel away the tape very carefully. And there you have it, your garage door is looking as good as new and it only took 2 days to complete the job!
